Sunday July 7 | 11:00 – 16:30 | Hampton Court Palace
Hampton Court is without doubt one of the greatest historic gems in London.
First impressions are visually astounding with multiple artfully twisted brick chimney-stacks and heraldic lions. Inside we will find the best preserved ‘hammerbeam’ Tudor hall in London, a staggeringly beautiful tapestry cycle, fascinating Tudor kitchens, a beautiful Chapel Royal, fascinating stories of Henry VIII’s many wives and Mantegna’s Triumphs of Caesar – one of the most important fresco cycles of the Renaissance and perhaps the greatest coup of King Charles I’s collecting days.
It is a surprise to then discover that connected to this Tudor jewel is a beautiful Georgian Palace containing stunning Wren and Grindling Gibbons apartments, an exceptional William III collection of weaponry and astonishing Antonio Verrio frescoes. And this is not all – Hampton Court’s gardens and maze are heavenly and well worth a visit in their own right.
In short, a day with Art History UK at Hampton Court is an absolute must for any Londoner or intrepid visitor to the capital.
