Rose specialises in creating bespoke private art history courses that are engaging, educational, fun and relaxed. They are for those with a hunger to learn about the world’s greatest cultural movements. In a ‘salon’ style setting Rose's courses allow you to get together with friends to discuss ground-breaking and beautiful art over tea and cakes, cocktails and canapés or in more formal settings. The painting, sculpture and architecture that you engage with serve as an anchor to many stimulating topics – literature, religion, philosophy, music, politics and much more.

Rose delivers a variety of programmes including explorations into Greek and Roman Antiquity, The Italian Renaissance, the European Baroque, French Rococo and the “Ancien Régime”, and the cultural connectivity between Europe and the Middle East.

For some course examples, please see below.

The Italian Renaissance

This course can be just two sessions, or we can take a more in-depth look and spread it over eight. Starting from the late medieval art of Giotto and Cimabue, we’ll work through some of Italy’s most thrilling artists (including Masaccio, Donatello, Brunelleschi, Botticelli and Titian), to reach the pinnacle of the Italian Renaissance with Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael. We can extend into the Northern Renaissance to look at Van Eyck, Holbein and Dürer or venture into the extraordinary mannerist movement to see the powerful way Pontormo and Bronzino reacted to the achievements of the High Renaissance.

The European Baroque

In 17th century Europe where nations fought for land and power, art became a vital promotional weapon. We’ll see how artists rose exponentially in status and became diplomats and the right hand men of kings and popes. We will look at Caravaggio, Palladio, Bernini, Borromini, Rubens, Van Dyck, Rembrandt and Velazquez among others. This course can be two sessions or eight depending on how much depth you’d like to go into. The Italian Renaissance course above would be a great prelude to this programme.

The Cultural History of Europe’s Greatest Cities (including Rome, Venice, Florence, London and Paris)

If you are spending a summer holiday in one of these great European cities, Rose can design a single talk or course around your itinerary. This will give you a brilliant head start in understanding the treasures you will encounter.

She can also help design your trip and personally lead tours across Italy and the UK.

Our Client's Say

My son Charlie and I were taken round the National Gallery by Rose Balston, and in three brief hours, we were inspired to levels of wonder. Rose has the gift of allowing you to discover things in the paintings that you would never have noticed before. Mark Hedges, Editor, Country Life

Small groups, passionate guides, enlightening conversations: these are the three ingredients that go into making Art History UK such a treat…it is not about lectures and seminars (though it is deeply educating): the focus is on bringing London’s treasures – the galleries and the museums – to life. And Rose’s knowledge is unquestionable. Balston has a soft spot for anything by the architects Nicholas Hawksmoor and John Soane, and the National Gallery is her second home. Condé Nast Traveller

Anyone present at one of Rose's lectures is transported to the era of the art she explores. She has an infectious passion for her subject, and with a remarkable ability to relate to her audience, she helps make the past immediate and relevant. This arises from a potent combination of a great depth of knowledge gleaned from rigorous research, and abundant natural charisma. Benjamin Walton, Head of History of Art, Westminster School for Boys, London

Professional, incredibly knowledgeable, imaginative and above all fun! I can't recommend Rose enough. She is a joy to work with and all her clients love her from students to CEOs. Her company is innovative and a breath of fresh air. Emma Rance, Director, Plum PA
